Counseling is a collaborative effort between the counselor and client. Professional counselors help clients identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional turmoil; seek to improve communication and coping skills; strengthen self-esteem; and promote behavior change and optimal mental health. Counseling involves discovering past issues that are preventing an individual from currently living a happy and fulfilling life and working through those issues. An evaluation which provides a diagnosis determines the course of treatment. Services offered include:

Counselors may also work in conjunction with other professionals such as psychiatrists that provide treatment through medication; social workers that provide the individuals or families with a variety of social resources; or educators preparing individual education plans.
An advanced education and licensure is required for professionals who provide counseling services and requirements vary by state. Professional organizations may include The American Counseling Association or The American Psychology Association.
